Selection Process — Stages You Must Clear
The RRB ALP 2026 selection follows a rigorous multi-stage process designed to test both academic knowledge and practical aptitude:
Stage 1 — CBT 1 (Computer Based Test – First Stage) This is a preliminary screening round. The marks secured here are NOT counted in the final merit list. It is solely used to shortlist candidates for the next stage. Notably, in the CEN 01/2026 notification, the General Awareness section has been removed from CBT 1 compared to previous years.
Stage 2 — CBT 2 (Computer Based Test – Second Stage) This is a two-part exam:
- Part A: Covers Technical and General subjects. Carries 50% weightage in the final merit.
- Part B: A trade-specific qualifying test based on your ITI/Diploma trade. Qualifying in nature.
Stage 3 — CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) This stage carries 50% weightage in the final merit. A minimum qualifying score of 42 out of 60 is required. CBAT is compulsory for ALP posts and tests cognitive and perceptual abilities essential for operating locomotives safely. Importantly, there is no negative marking in this stage.
Key Change in 2026: The merit weightage has been revised — CBT-2 Part A and CBAT each carry 50% now. Previously, CBT-2 had 70% and CBAT had 30%. This means aptitude preparation is now equally critical as technical knowledge.
Stage 4 — Document Verification (DV) Shortlisted candidates are called to verify original certificates and documents.
Stage 5 — Medical Examination Candidates must meet the medical fitness standards prescribed by the Railway Administration to perform duties associated with the ALP post.
How to Apply Online — Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps carefully to complete your application before tonight’s deadline:
- Visit the official portal: Go to www.rrbapply.gov.in
- Login or Register: If you registered during any 2024 or 2025 RRB recruitment, use the same login credentials. Do NOT create a new account — duplicate registration leads to disqualification.
- Select the correct notification: Choose “CEN-01/2026 (ALP) – Apply for Pay Level 2 post of Assistant Loco Pilot”
- Fill in your details: Enter personal information, educational qualifications, ITI trade or Diploma branch, and Aadhaar details (Aadhaar verification is mandatory; your name and date of birth must match your Class 10 certificate exactly)
- Choose your preferred RRB zone: You may apply to only one zone. This choice is final and cannot be changed after submission.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Creating a new account when you already have one from a previous RRB recruitment
- Selecting the wrong RRB zone (it cannot be changed post-submission)
- Uploading blurry or incorrectly sized photographs or signatures
- Not saving your confirmation page or Registration Number
- Choosing a trade in CBT-2 Part B that doesn’t match your actual qualification
- Applying to multiple RRB zones (this leads to automatic disqualification)
Important Note About Today’s Deadline
Server congestion near the closing hour is extremely common for large-scale government recruitment portals. If you haven’t applied yet, act immediately — don’t wait until 11 PM. Slow loading, OTP delays, and payment gateway timeouts near midnight can result in an incomplete application that gets rejected. The portal closes at 11:59 PM tonight without any exceptions.
